An engaging and educational theatre production is set to captivate families across Stoke-on-Trent as it makes a welcome return to local libraries. Stoke The Fiery Dragon, an immersive performance that first toured schools and communities during the SOT100 anniversary celebrations in 2025, is back to inspire audiences with the rich industrial heritage of the city.
A Journey Through Stoke-on-Trent's Past
Specifically designed for young children and their families, the show offers a whistle-stop journey through some of the most remarkable events that Stoke-on-Trent has witnessed over the past century. Through the eyes of two playful characters, potters named 'Clay' and 'Mold', portrayed by actors Naomi Johnson and Elizabeth Daily-Hunt, the story unfolds as they embark on a mission to reignite their beloved pet dragon's puff.
Historical Highlights and Local Stories
The performance cleverly weaves in references to famous stories and notable figures from the city's history. Key historical moments featured include:
- The visit of King George V and Queen Mary to confer the Royal Charter in 1925, which elevated the borough to city status.
- Ann Margaret Savous Shirley, a Stoke-on-Trent-born historian renowned for her work on Polar Exploration in the Arctic and Antarctic during the 1960s.
Written by education practitioner Julia Gay and directed by Naomi Felton, the production aims to give prominence to local voices and stories, making history accessible and entertaining for a new generation.
Encouraging Engagement with Heritage
This immersive piece of theatre not only recognises the significance of Stoke-on-Trent's industrious past but also encourages new visitors to learn about the city's famous pottery trade. By blending education with entertainment, it fosters a deeper connection to the area's cultural legacy.
