Students Collaborate on Staffordshire Bull Terrier Sculpture for County-Wide Art Trail

Art and Design students from South Staffordshire College have been actively engaged in a creative partnership with local artist Joanna Dawidowska to help design a new sculpture for the upcoming Staffy Trail. This county-wide public art initiative aims to celebrate the rich culture and vibrant creativity of Staffordshire through a series of large-scale, artist-designed sculptures.

Creative Workshops and Design Development

During the collaborative workshop, students shared innovative ideas, explored various themes, and developed design concepts that will directly inspire the final artwork for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier sculpture, affectionately known as a 'staffy'. This hands-on experience provided a unique opportunity for the students to contribute to a live public art project, allowing them to witness firsthand how creative ideas evolve from initial concept through to the final design stage.

Launch and Installation Details

The Staffy Trail is scheduled to launch on Staffordshire Day, which falls on May 1. The trail will feature a series of sculptures strategically placed across the county, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore town centres, discover local stories, and engage with art in public spaces. The finished sculpture co-designed by the students will be installed near Lichfield train station throughout the spring and summer months. Following this temporary display, the Staffy sculpture will find a permanent home outside Lichfield College.

Educational and Community Impact

Faculty director Chris Hopkins expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “This has been a brilliant opportunity for our students to work with a professional artist and see their ideas contribute to a high-profile public art project. It’s exciting to know that their creativity will be visible to the whole community from May.” Artist Joanna Dawidowska added: “It’s been fantastic to work with students to co-design a sculpture that tells a story of inclusion – that there really is something for everyone in Staffordshire. Coming back to work at Lichfield College again has been really special for me, and it’s been lovely to see the creativity and enthusiasm of the students and staff.”

This project not only enhances the students' practical skills but also fosters a sense of community pride and artistic engagement, making art accessible to all in Staffordshire.
