Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society (PODS) has been crowned champion of the Wales One-Act Play Festival following a successful weekend at the national final in Colwyn Bay.
The society's production of Robert Scott's comedy All By Myself won the prestigious Best Overall Production Award, securing PODS the honour of representing Wales at the British Final of the One-Act Play Festival next month. The achievement follows PODS' success at the Glamorgan Drama League stage of the competition at Chapter Arts Centre in April, where the production first qualified for the national final. In Colwyn Bay, PODS competed against five outstanding theatre groups from across Wales to claim the national title.
As Welsh champions, PODS will now face the winners from England, Scotland and Ireland at the British Final, which takes place on July 3 and July 4 at Theatre Clwyd in Mold.
PODS chair Peter Knowles said: "We are absolutely thrilled and honoured to have earned the privilege of representing Wales at the British Final of the One-Act Play Festival. This achievement is a testament to the talent, dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the production. I am incredibly proud of our cast and crew who have succeeded in delivering a production to such an exceptionally high standard. To have the opportunity to represent not only PODS but Wales as a whole at the British Final is a tremendous honour."
Comedy Production
The cast of PODS award-winning production of Robert Scott's comedy All By Myself delivered a performance that captivated the judges and audience alike.
The British Final forms part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Theatre Clwyd and is organised by the United Kingdom Community Drama Federation (UKCDF), which oversees the competition in partnership with theatre organisations from each of the four home nations.
The victory marks another major milestone in what has already been a busy and successful year for the Penarth-based society. Last month, PODS completed a sell-out run of the Queen musical We Will Rock You at the Paget Rooms and preparations are already well underway for a packed programme of future productions.
Upcoming Shows
PODS' youth group, PODyS, will stage Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr next month, whilst work has begun for a stage adaptation of the BBC sitcom Hi-De-Hi, which will be performed at the Paget Rooms in October. The society is also preparing its annual pantomime, Robin Hood, and recently announced its 2027 spring musical, Cole Porter's Anything Goes.
Founded in 1924 to bring high-quality theatre to the local community, PODS continues to provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in performing arts, both on stage and behind the scenes.
