Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the permanent signing of Welsh international midfielder Jordan James from Championship side Birmingham City, the club confirmed on Monday.
Transfer Details and Contract Length
The 20-year-old midfielder has signed a long-term contract at Molineux, with the deal running until the summer of 2029. Wolves have paid an undisclosed fee for the player, who had one year remaining on his contract at St Andrew's.
James becomes Wolves' third signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of defender Matt Doherty and midfielder Tommy Doyle. The club has been active in the market as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season under manager Gary O'Neil.
Player Profile and International Experience
James, who was born in Hereford, came through the academy at Birmingham City and made his senior debut for the club in August 2021. He has since made 82 appearances for the Blues, scoring eight goals and providing four assists across all competitions.
On the international stage, James has earned 11 caps for Wales since making his debut in March 2023. He scored his first international goal in a friendly against Gibraltar in October 2023 and has quickly established himself as a regular in the Wales squad under manager Rob Page.
According to Wolves' official statement, James is a versatile midfielder who can operate in both central and attacking roles. The club's sporting director Matt Hobbs described the signing as a significant addition to the squad.
Manager's Comments on the Signing
Wolves manager Gary O'Neil expressed his delight at securing James's signature, stating: "Jordan is a young player with huge potential. He has already shown his quality at Championship level and for Wales, and we believe he has the attributes to develop further with us."
O'Neil added: "He is a dynamic midfielder who can contribute at both ends of the pitch. We are excited to work with him and help him reach his full potential at Wolves."
Impact on Wolves Squad and Future Plans
James's arrival adds depth to Wolves' midfield options, which already include the likes of Joao Gomes, Mario Lemina, and Boubacar Traore. The club is expected to continue its recruitment drive as the transfer window progresses, with further additions possible in both defensive and attacking areas.
The signing also represents a significant investment in young talent, with James being viewed as a player for the present and future. Wolves have a track record of developing young players, and the club's recruitment team identified James as a target who fits their long-term strategy.
James is expected to compete for a place in the starting lineup during pre-season, with Wolves scheduled to play friendly matches against Como, Bristol City, and Crystal Palace before the start of the Premier League campaign. The midfielder will wear the number 14 shirt for the upcoming season, the club confirmed.
