Moya Cole Hospice, formerly known as St Ann’s, has proudly announced the opening of a new £26.5 million state-of-the-art hospice in Greater Manchester. The facility is situated adjacent to the now-retired site in Heald Green, Cheadle.
The new hospice comprises two buildings connected by a link corridor. The first building houses the main entrance and includes the Being You Centre for outpatient services, rehabilitation facilities, a café, and offices. The second building is home to the new Inpatient Unit, featuring 27 patient beds across 23 rooms, offering patients enhanced privacy. It also includes a family lounge, a dining area, several quiet spaces, and an interior courtyard for patients and their loved ones.
Each patient bedroom provides direct access to the hospice gardens, with doors wide enough to accommodate a bed if needed.
A Dream Realised
Rachel McMillan, chief executive of Moya Cole Hospice, described the new facility as a dream come true. “It is truly emotional that our new hospice in Heald Green is now fully operational. I recall the initial discussions about a new hospice site, contracting PRP Architects for the design, securing the site, the groundbreaking, our contractors Caddick Construction laying the first bricks, and watching the building rise. This new site will make a world of difference to our patients, their families, and their loved ones for generations to come.”
She added, “Our former site in Heald Green was never purpose-built as a hospice. We made the most of it, but it became tired and no longer fit for purpose. We carry the memories with us to this new, monumental facility that we are immensely proud of.”
Contractor and Architect Contributions
Caddick Construction, the contractor for the project, broke ground in June 2024. Dave Saville, regional managing director of Caddick Construction North West, commented: “The new Moya Cole Hospice is one of the most rewarding projects we have worked on. Ensuring this development was built to the highest standard to provide vital, high-quality care and support has been our constant priority. The staff at Moya Cole became more than clients; it has been fantastic to see the new hospice open its doors.”
He continued, “We were determined not only to build the facility but also to support the incredible work of Moya Cole Hospice. Our team raised £95,000 for the hospice through various fundraising efforts. We are immensely proud to have been part of this project and know the impact it will have on the local community for years to come.”
Fiona Sadler, associate director at PRP, said: “Seeing the new Moya Cole Hospice transition from a vision to a physical reality in Stockport is a monumental achievement. We have been on a decade-long journey of feasibility, consultation, design, fundraising, and construction. The client’s commitment is a true testament to what an inspiring vision can achieve. It is joyful to finally stand at the entrance, and I have no doubt this building will empower the hospice to thrive and elevate their already first-class care for generations.”
Community Support and Fundraising
The £26.5 million development was funded in part through the incredible support of the community, with fundraising efforts and generous public donations raising over £2 million as part of the Build it Together appeal.
Although the new hospice is fully operational, fundraising continues. Moya Cole Hospice needs to raise approximately £20,000 per day to deliver state-of-the-art care to the people of Greater Manchester and beyond. This would not be possible without the continued support of the community.
