Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas has confirmed discussions have taken place regarding his future, but he is currently focused on making the most of his loan spell with Birmingham City.
Finding Form Under Chris Davies
The 20-year-old attacker is finally enjoying a run in the Birmingham side, having started their last two matches. He scored in the Championship against Coventry City and followed it up with a positive performance in the FA Cup victory over Cambridge United.
Koumas has made 21 appearances for Blues this season, but only five of those have been starts in the league. His opportunities were limited earlier in the campaign, largely due to the exceptional form of experienced winger Demarai Gray.
"Getting a goal, especially against a team like Coventry, boosts your confidence instantly," Koumas told BirminghamLive. "Me being a confidence player, I need that to go and perform freely without any sort of pressure on my back."
Loan at a Crossroads
There had been speculation that Liverpool might recall Koumas this January, given his lack of consistent starts. This loan move has not gone as smoothly as his breakthrough spell at Stoke City last season, where he featured in 49 games.
"Last year I played 49 games and started a big majority of them," Koumas reflected. "It's been a different start this year but whenever I get put in I’m ready to give my best."
However, with Gray now injured and not expected back until February, Koumas has a crucial window to impress. He is set to feature in Birmingham's four remaining Championship fixtures this month, playing in his favoured left-wing position.
Future Talks and Current Focus
The player and his parent club will likely seek assurances from Birmingham manager Chris Davies about his role once Gray returns to fitness. For now, the immediate priority is clear.
Koumas expressed his admiration for the Blues boss, stating: "I really like the gaffer. He sees my attributes well. We spoke about it before I came in and I’ve been working hard in training for months and months now, just so I’m ready when I go on the pitch."
When directly asked about the situation with Liverpool, the young winger kept his cards close to his chest. "We’ve obviously had conversations," he admitted, "but I’m keeping my head down, working hard and we’ll see what happens."
For the time being, Lewis Koumas appears content to see out his loan at St Andrew's, aiming to build on his recent momentum and prove his worth in the second tier.
