As the travel season reaches its peak, UK tourists have been reminded of a crucial airport security rule that, if ignored, could lead to significant delays. The advice, shared by a travel agent on TikTok, highlights a common item that often causes hold-ups at security checkpoints.
The Number One Cause of Delays
Travel agent Jake, known for sharing candid tips online, revealed that reusable stainless steel water bottles are currently the leading cause of delays at UK airport security. Despite the scrapping of the 100ml liquid rule at some airports, these bottles still need to be emptied before passing through security.
Jake explained: "This is the number one reason for delays at airport security in the UK right now, and almost everyone has one in their bag. But there's one thing that's catching everybody out. It's these. Reusable, stainless steel water bottles because, while the 100ml rule has been scrapped, and for some airports you can take up to two litres of liquids with you, these still need to be emptied."
Why Must They Be Empty?
Advanced security scanners cannot check the liquid inside stainless steel or insulated bottles due to the double-wall insulation. As a result, any liquid in these bottles will cause the bag to be pulled aside for inspection, leading to embarrassing moments and delays.
"If you do have one in your bag and it's got liquid in, then you're going to have your bag pulled aside. You're going to have that embarrassing moment on the belt where you see your bag go down a different aisle," Jake added.
What Happens If You Forget?
Fortunately, if you forget to empty your bottle, security staff will not make you throw it away. Instead, they will pour out the liquid, which still causes delays. "They're just going to pour out the liquid that's in there. So this is just going to cause further delays for you getting through duty-free and being able to relax before you get on your flight," Jake noted.
Airport-Specific Rules
While some airports, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, now allow containers up to two litres due to advanced 3D scanning technology, this does not apply to metal or insulated bottles. Always check your departure airport's regulations before travelling.
This simple rule can save you from unnecessary hassle. Empty your reusable water bottle before security to ensure a smooth journey.
