New research has revealed the UK cities and towns with the most speed cameras, with West Midlands locations featuring prominently in the rankings. Tipton in the West Midlands has been named as a speed camera hotspot, ranking fourth among UK towns with 1.79 cameras per square mile.
National Rankings and Comparisons
Bradford topped the national list with 2.18 cameras per square mile, 13% more than London despite being much smaller. The West Yorkshire city has paired its dense camera network with 20mph zone rollouts as part of an assertive road safety approach. London ranks second with 1.93 cameras per square mile but leads in total numbers with 671 cameras. Coventry came third among major cities with 243 cameras and 1.57 per square mile density.
Birmingham ranked 12th overall with 1.08 speed cameras per square mile. Research shows 43% of drivers admit exceeding limits on 30mph roads, rising to 76% on 20mph roads.

Psychologist Dr Gandolfi said factors include "lighter traffic, more recreational driving, and drivers may perceive a lower likelihood of encountering enforcement measures."
Speed Awareness Course Trends
Speed awareness course referrals have more than doubled in a decade, with 1.84 million drivers attending courses in 2024 - a 139% increase since 2011. The surge reflects both increased enforcement and driver willingness to opt for education over penalties.
