Birmingham Streets Transformation: Full List and Dates

Construction work to transform Birmingham city centre will take place over two years. Here are the next steps in the project.

Current Progress and Plans

As work progresses on New Street and contractors apply finishing touches to a new look road, officials have shared more details about the next phases. The busy thoroughfare has been under construction since the start of January, with Frankfurt Christmas Market stalls replaced by fencing to allow upgrades to the 'public realm'.

The improvements include new 'high quality' paving, wider footways, new barriers to protect against hostile vehicles, cycle stands, benches, and bike parking spaces. There will also be amended traffic orders to make the city centre more pedestrian and cyclist friendly, along with better wayfinding to help visitors navigate. A continuous-level route between New Street station and nearby shops and businesses is planned.

Timeline and Completion

Contractors CPC Civils, which is leading the project, has shared sequencing information with expected start and end dates. While the schedule has shifted slightly to allow for concrete removal under pavements, the project remains on course for completion within two years. According to the contractor, all work should be finished by January 2028.
