Nearly half of the vehicles stopped during a multi-agency road operation in West Bromwich were seized, with four arrests made. The operation, conducted in the West Bromwich area of Sandwell, saw a total of 79 vehicles pulled over, resulting in 31 being taken off the streets.
Multi-Agency Operation Targets Road Safety
The initiative was a Multi Agency Road Operation (MARSO) involving West Midlands Police, the DVLA, DVSA enforcement, Motor Insurers Bureau, Wolverhampton Taxi Licensing, and the HMRC fuel testing unit. The operation aimed to tackle a range of offences, from untaxed vehicles to dangerous driving.
During the checks, officers discovered a variety of issues: 10 reports of no tax, 11 reports of tinted windows, 19 reports of misrepresented registration, five vehicles without up-to-date MOTs, three drivers not wearing seat belts, four vehicles with illegal tyres, six vehicles in a dangerous condition, and two drivers reported for using a mobile phone at the wheel.
Seizures and Arrests
Of the 31 vehicles seized, 21 were impounded for no insurance and 10 for no tax. Additionally, four arrests were carried out, with members of the public detained for driving while disqualified, failing to appear in court, theft, and possession of Class B drugs.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We regularly conduct road operations working with communities and partners to create safer roads for everyone, deterring criminals who abuse the road network." The spokesperson added: "Your safety is our number one priority, and we are committed to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads."
