Exhibition Challenges West Country's 'Pretty' Image with 15 Artists
Exeter's 'Not A Pretty Landscape' Art Exhibition Opens

A provocative new art exhibition is set to challenge the Southwest's deep-rooted artistic traditions this month. 'Not A Pretty Landscape' opens at Kaleider Studios in Exeter, presenting a bold alternative to the region's celebrated depictions of picturesque coastlines and rural scenes.

Beyond the Picturesque: A Modern West Country Vision

The exhibition, running from January 31 to February 1, 2026, brings together 15 artists whose work deliberately steps away from the expected. Curator Claire Le Day is championing a more diverse and challenging creative voice for the region. "The West Country is more than picturesque estuaries and rolling hills," Le Day states. "This exhibition is about creating space for work that doesn't fit the expected mould. It's about art that challenges, surprises, and reflects the diverse creative voices actually living and working here today."

The show will feature a mix of portraits, contemporary pieces, and unconventional landscapes. It draws inspiration from historic rebellious art movements, including the early Impressionist exhibitions and the famous 'Rejects' show, which displayed works turned away by the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition.

Direct Artist Access and a New Sales Model

In a significant departure from standard gallery practice, all participating artists will retain 100% of their sales, bypassing the traditional commission model. Many artists, including featured names like Olivia Palmer and portrait artist Jo Beer, will be present throughout the weekend. This offers visitors a rare chance to purchase work directly and engage in conversation about the artists' practices.

The exhibition argues for creative integrity in an increasingly digital age, positioning art as a vital space for reflection and genuine connection. Original works will be available alongside more affordable prints and cards, ensuring the art is accessible to a wide range of budgets.
