Paul O'Grady's Husband Announces Major Tribute Exhibition on Third Anniversary
Andre Portasio, the husband of the late British icon Paul O'Grady, has made a significant announcement on the third anniversary of his death. O'Grady, beloved for his roles as Lily Savage and host of ITV's For The Love of Dogs, passed away on March 28, 2023, at the age of 67 from a sudden cardiac arrhythmia at his home in Kent, leaving millions of fans heartbroken.
Exhibition Details and Announcement
Portasio revealed that a special tribute exhibition, titled The Paul O'Grady Story, will open on December 4, 2026, at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead, O'Grady's hometown. The announcement was made on Paul's Instagram page, where Portasio expressed that while the day marks a sad milestone, the exhibition aims to honor his legacy.
He wrote: "Today sadly marks three years since Paul passed away. Needless to say, we all miss him greatly. But with great honor, I can announce a major exhibition delving into Paul’s private archive revealing his life in front of and behind the cameras."
Exhibition Features and Community Impact
The exhibition will be free to the public and include:
- A first glimpse into O'Grady's extensive private archive.
- Objects and costumes from his career, highlighting his journey from Tranmere to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
- A community and participation program contextualizing him as an LGBTQIA+ icon, award-winning broadcaster, and passionate activist.
- A focus on his advocacy for animals, particularly through his work with Battersea Dogs Home.
Portasio emphasized that the exhibition will present O'Grady as one of Britain's most cherished cultural figures, giving a voice to the voiceless, including those with four paws. He thanked supporters such as Wirral Council, the Heritage Fund, and the National Lottery for making the project possible.
Background on O'Grady's Health and Legacy
In the months before his death, O'Grady heartbreakingly refused a life-saving heart operation, declining an implantable defibrillator because he did not want to let anyone down due to commitments to film For the Love of Dogs and appear in the musical Annie. Friends later revealed they believed he had been suffering from an eating disorder for decades.
O'Grady ensured his five dogs were cared for, leaving them a substantial sum in his will. Portasio concluded his announcement by expressing hope that visitors will feel the warmth of O'Grady's spirit and remember the joy he brought to so many.
