The vibrant Aberystwyth-based indie pop rock ensemble, Misha and the Kings, has broken their recent silence regarding their absence from the live music circuit. The dynamic four-piece has disclosed an ambitious pursuit: securing a coveted spot in the Eurovision Song Contest for 2026.
A Unique Pathway to the Eurovision Stage
Facing the reality that there is no direct route for UK artists to represent their own nation at Eurovision, the band strategically redirected their focus. They turned their attention towards one of the few European countries with an open-door policy for international acts: San Marino.
This microstate, entirely surrounded by Italy in Southern Europe, is renowned for welcoming overseas musicians into its national selection process. This unique system offers artists from across the continent a rare opportunity to compete for a place on the world's most prominent music stage.
Progress Through the Selection Process
Earlier this year, Misha and the Kings took the first crucial step by submitting an original composition to San Marino's official national selection. Their track was deemed worthy of competition, propelling them into an initial online casting round judged by a Sammarinese panel.
With support from local creatives in Borth, the band meticulously recorded and filmed their audition. This effort proved successful, as they have now progressed to the subsequent stage of the competition.
The Next Challenge: A Journey to San Marino
The band has received a formal invitation to attend an in-person performance evaluation in San Marino itself. This critical next step holds the potential to advance them to the televised semi-finals scheduled for March.
Ivan Anchantreal, a spokesperson for Misha and the Kings, expressed the surreal nature of their journey, stating: "It still doesn't quite feel real. One minute we're rehearsing in West Wales, the next we're preparing to perform in front of Eurovision judges."
Balancing Dreams with Reality
The band members emphasise that their musical ambitions are balanced alongside full-time employment and managing everyday living expenses. The logistical and financial challenge of travelling to San Marino—potentially on multiple occasions—presents a significant hurdle.
Crowdfunding the Eurovision Dream
To help mitigate the substantial costs associated with travel and production, Misha and the Kings have launched a dedicated crowdfunding campaign. In a gesture of gratitude to their supporters, those who contribute will receive an exclusive early copy of their Eurovision entry—a track currently withheld from public release due to strict competition rules.
Reflecting on their extraordinary endeavour, the band shared: "At the very least, this is the adventure of a lifetime; at best, it's a chance to represent Aberystwyth on the Eurovision stage." Their journey continues as they aim to bring Welsh indie pop rock to a global audience.
