Anna Dawson, the actress best known for playing Violet Bucket in the classic British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances and for her work on The Benny Hill Show, has died at the age of 88. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, according to a statement from her faith community in New Zealand.

Members of Christ Church Anglican at Kororāreka Russell in New Zealand announced the news in a Facebook post, describing Dawson as a treasured member of their congregation. Violet Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances

It was in the mid-1990s that Dawson captivated audiences as Violet Bucket, the sister of Hyacinth Bucket (played by Dame Patricia Routledge) in the beloved sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. Hyacinth famously boasted about Violet as "the one with the Mercedes, sauna and room for a pony." Despite appearing in only four episodes, Dawson made a lasting impression alongside co-stars Clive Swift, Geoffrey Hughes, and Josephine Tewson. The series ran for five seasons and 44 episodes, and Violet marked Dawson's final acting role. She subsequently retired from public life and moved to New Zealand with her husband.

Personal loss and legacy

The announcement of Dawson's death comes just six months after her husband, John Boulter, passed away. Her passing also follows the death of her iconic co-star Dame Patricia Routledge, who died in October 2025 at the age of 96. Routledge's agent said at the time: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love. Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia's passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles. She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world."

Dawson's contribution to British comedy remains fondly remembered by fans worldwide.
