Eldon Square Newcastle Summer Events: Free Kids Activities

Eldon Square, Newcastle's leading shopping destination, is transforming into a magical hub of free family entertainment over the school holidays. The centre has revealed a packed programme running from July through to September, featuring superhero appearances, interactive play zones, and exciting giveaways. Youngsters will be able to meet their favourite characters, get their faces painted for free, and explore a unique local sculpture trail.

Free Face Painting Sessions

The free face painting sessions will take place in the centre's Community Quarter on July 25, July 26, July 30, and July 31. These fun sessions will also run on August 1 and August 2 between 12pm and 3pm.

Roaming Superheroes and Princess Appearances

The excitement continues throughout August with roaming superheroes appearing across the centre on August 8, August 9, and August 16. Magical princesses will then take over the shopping spot on August 22 and August 23 to meet families and pose for photographs. Visitors will also have the opportunity to support the Newcastle United Foundation during these character visits, with donation buckets available on site.

Tiny Toon Play Village Returns

The centre is also proudly sponsoring the return of the hugely popular Tiny Toon Play Village in Old Eldon Square for the third year running. Running from July 20 until August 31, this immersive experience gives young visitors the chance to explore a miniature version of Newcastle. The miniature village features iconic local landmarks including the Tyne and Wear Metro train, the Tyne Bridge, and a mini Eldon Square. Delightful new features inspired by local businesses like Pink Lane Bakery and Tyneside Cinema have also been added to the village this year.

The attraction is open from 10am to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, the village opens slightly earlier at 9.30am for dedicated Toddler Takeover sessions. Sunday sessions run from 9am to 4.30pm, opening an hour earlier to provide a quieter environment for people who prefer a more relaxed experience.

Peter Rabbit 'Tales on the Tyne' Sculpture Trail

Adding even more excitement to the holidays, the centre is taking part in the region-wide Peter Rabbit 'Tales on the Tyne' sculpture trail. Running from July 15 until September 14, the free public art trail helps raise vital funds for St Oswald's Hospice. Eldon Square will host its own specially decorated Peter Rabbit sculpture, inviting families to stop for photographs during their shopping trips. Visitors can also scan a QR code by the sculpture to enter weekly prize draws, with vouchers, toys, and gift cards up for grabs.

Family-Friendly Dining Options

Those making a full day of it can enjoy a wide range of family-friendly dining options, including the recently opened Freight Island. Popular spots like Frankie & Benny's, Wagamama, and Nando's are also available for a quick bite or an evening meal after a day of activities.

Quotes and Further Information

Helen Cowie from Eldon Square said: “We are looking forward to welcoming families to the centre this summer, with a line-up of fun-filled free activities available for little ones, perfect for keeping them entertained during the summer holiday period. Alongside the centre's own programme of roaming superheroes, princess appearances and face painting, we're also proud to be part of the city-wide Peter Rabbit: Tales on the Tyne sculpture trail and one of the sponsors supporting the return of the hugely popular Tiny Toon Play Village, giving families even more ways to enjoy Newcastle this summer.”
