ITV was forced to make a significant, last-minute edit to the launch episode of The Masked Singer on Saturday night, pulling a scheduled performance due to potential insensitivities linked to a recent tragedy.
Why Red Panda's Performance Was Removed
The popular singing competition, which returned for a new series on January 3, 2026, features celebrities disguised in elaborate costumes. Among the new characters like Moth and Can of Worms was Red Panda, whose first-round performance was pre-recorded and set to air.
However, executives decided to cut the act following the devastating fire at The Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. The blaze broke out at 1.30am on January 1 during New Year's Eve celebrations, with reports suggesting it may have been linked to sparkler flares on champagne bottles.
An ITV spokesperson explained the decision, stating: "In light of the tragic events in Switzerland, we took the decision to remove Red Panda's performance on The Masked Singer in tonight's programme owing to potential insensitivities within the theme and lyrics of the song." They assured viewers that Red Panda will perform in the coming weeks.
Schedule Shifts and Fan Reaction
The change contributed to a slight shift in the evening's schedule. ITV announced on social media that the episode would air at 6:40pm instead of 6:30pm, a move that initially confused some fans.
One viewer questioned online if there had been a power outage, while others noted an extended news bulletin. Reactions were mixed, with some expressing concern and others making light-hearted jokes about the delay, with one suggesting a contestant had forgotten their mask.
What's New in This Series of The Masked Singer?
The new series, hosted by Joel Dommett, sees the return of the judging panel: Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, and Mo Gilligan. This year introduces a fresh format twist for the first two episodes, featuring full musical bands.
The panel must identify the lead singer of each band, starting with Goldfish and backing band No Trout, followed by Emperor Penguin and the Antarctic Funkeys in the subsequent episode. Dommett praised the new format for bringing incredible energy to the show.
Throughout the series, the judges will face the challenge of unmasking a total of 12 other disguised celebrities alongside the band members, promising another season of surprising reveals and vocal performances.
